DO WEBSITES STILL MATTER WITH AI SEARCH?

Short answer: more than ever, because AI search doesn't invent its answers. When an assistant recommends a plumber or summarizes "best web designer near me," it's drawing on what it found and trusted. No site, nothing to draw on.

01

WHERE AI ANSWERS COME FROM

When someone asks an AI assistant or hits an AI-generated answer box in search, the response is assembled from sources: pages the system crawled, parsed, and decided to trust. The links may be fewer and the answer may sit above the classic results, but the raw material is still the open web. Your website is either part of that raw material or it isn't.

That's the strategic shift worth understanding. The website's audience is no longer just people. It's also the machines that brief people.

02

WHAT GETS A LOCAL BUSINESS CITED

Facts, stated plainly: services, towns served, hours, specifics. Vague pages summarize into nothing
Consistency: the same name, address, and phone everywhere the machine looks, because contradictions read as unreliability
Structure: business and FAQ markup that hands over the facts in the format machines parse first
Direct answers: a page that answers its question in the first paragraph is quotable; one that buries the answer isn't
Speed and crawlability: a site the crawler struggles to load is a site that doesn't make the answer
03

THE PART THAT DOESN'T CHANGE

Notice that every item on that list was already good practice for ordinary search, and for humans. The credibility check hasn't moved either: Stanford's research found 75% of consumers judge a company's credibility by its website design, and the AI answer's last step is still a person clicking through to decide if you look legitimate. AI search raises the bar on the same fundamentals; it doesn't replace them.

So the honest advice is unglamorous: the way to "optimize for AI" is to have the fastest, clearest, most factual site in your trade and town, marked up properly, kept current. That's been our whole thesis at Old City Studios since the doors opened. The assistants just made the argument for us.

WHAT TO DO THIS QUARTER

Make sure every fact an assistant would need (services, areas, hours, contact) exists in plain text on your site
Add or fix your business and FAQ structured data
Reconcile your listings so every source agrees about you
Answer your customers' most-asked questions on pages, one question per page, answer first
[ ASKED & ANSWERED ]
Will AI search kill website traffic?

It changes it. Some quick questions get answered without a click, but for local commercial searches the outcome is a recommendation, and the recommended business still gets the visit and the call. The competition is now for being in the answer.

What is AI search optimization (AIO) for a small business?

Making your site easy for AI systems to crawl, parse, and trust: plain-text facts, structured data, consistent listings, direct answers, fast pages. It overlaps almost entirely with good SEO, done more rigorously.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT or other assistants?

There's no submission form or shortcut. Assistants draw on the public record: your website, your reviews, your listings. Businesses with a clear, factual, consistent web presence are the ones that surface. Build that, and you're competing.
